I am a non-binary dancer who dances both roles. Especially since the pandemic started, I have mainly been attending dances that use gender-free calling (whether positional or larks/robins). Recently, I traveled to attend an ECD event where they called dances using men and women. While I was slightly bothered by the use of gendered role terms, I was more frustrated by the fact that, at this dance, there were assumptions made about what role I would dance, including moving me into the perceived “correct” position. I have found that removing gendered role terms means that there is an expectation that dancers check in with one another about what role they would like to dance. It is these small interactions of care that have made gender-free dances feel more welcoming to me.
