At my local dance, some callers have begun using positional calling and some still use the role terms men and women.  There is also often talk of attracting more young dancers.  One evening there was a young dancer and the caller was using the terms men and women.  In one dance the caller repeated over and over to those dancing the men’s role, “place your lady in”.  I winced.  My experience is that many young people prefer gender-neutral pronouns and are sensitive to the gender identities of themselves and others.  I wasn’t sure of the gender identity and views of this particular young person, but was so embarrassed for our community that we couldn’t be more welcoming to a new generation of dancers.  We don’t know why, but the young dancer did not return.
